Collage & Sketchbook

Over the past couple years I’ve jumped back into creating artwork in my sketchbook. What I forgot I loved doing - was creating low pressure artwork. Low pressure in the sense that its testing out ideas, trying new skills and just putting a pen to paper, that tactile experience that I crave after being in the digital world too long.

Most of the imagery popping up in my sketchbook is collage, with gel pens, archival inks, and sometimes I through in a little iridescent glitter just to mix it up…

this is passion…

When I was an undergrad, part of our program was to complete weekly sketchbook assignments. My professor was upset because some folks in my class were not taking it seriously. I on the other hand - really dove into it.

He walked over and grabbed my book, he looked through my scribbles, collages and exploded emotions on the pages of my sketchbook. He held up the book and yelled, “See this. THIS is passion!!” And dropped my sketchbook back onto the table.

When I need to motivate myself to be creative - I think of that moment.
